We’ve started our second week of school and we’re moving right along. Today we finished our Essential Spelling Lists Words, after an herculean effort. I’ve been very impressed with the level of spelling of this class. They are the strongest spellers I have seen in second grade in my 5 years of teaching this level. We will start reading tests tomorrow.

To help your child during this first testing period, you can make sure that he or she is getting enough sleep, and that they are eating healthy foods and drinking water. Be sure to send a water bottle to school. The brain needs water to function efficiently, so help your child stay hydrated.

I have to start with an apology. Edublogs is unavailable from school, so I have not been able to start posting, but here I am now, writing from home.

It seems also inconceivable that a whole week has already gone by! We have been hard at work, getting to know each other and our teachers. We have also started our beginning-of-the-year assessments. These include math facts, spelling, writing, and reading. We will continue with these through next week, as many of the tests must be administered individually to each child.

The Classroom Chronicle, our classroom newsletter, should go out today. Please be on the lookout for this important class publication. It will contain articles written by 2F students, on topics of their choosing, so it really is a glimpse into classroom life.

Last for this post, but not least, please leave a comment when you visit. I will be posting photos and student work here, and we’d love to hear what you think.

See you around school!

Today, we made the water cycle. How could we “make” the water cycle?, you ask.

We acted it out. We acted out evaporation, condensation, and precipitacion.

Evaporation is when the water goes up when it gets heated by the sun. The liquid water turns into water vapor.

The Green Team

Condensation is when the water vapor turns into water again and forms a cloud.

The Yellow Team

Precipitation is when the droplets get heavy enough so it rains.

The Blue Team

And then it starts all over again, and over again, and over again, and over again…

The Red Team

We are wrapping up our endangered animals unit, and as the final assessment, students have been creating a movie to show that they have understood the central idea, “Human actions can cause or prevent extinction”. The movie showcases an animal, giving some background information and stating the reasons why the animal is endangered. The students also include suggestions about what can be done to save the animals from extinction.

We are making these movies in Windows MovieMaker, which the students have already used to create a short movie about themselves. Parents were able to see those movies at the Student-Led Conferences held earlier in the year. Their animal movies are more elaborate, as they include photos, music, sub-titles, and narration.

The screenshot below shows Jong Min’s movie project file on manatees.

The Grade 5 exhibition is the culmination of the PYP experience, and it is obvious that these fifth graders put in a great deal of effort and thought into their learning. Just think, 3 short years from now, our current second graders will be presenting theirs! I can’t wait.
